Rakhi Madan has been nominated for two awards at the 12th annual Canadian Mortgage Awards, and having walked in the shoes of the people she’s helped makes her nominations sweeter.
Madan is nominated for the Alternative Broker Specialist of the Year (New to Canada) Award, and having moved to Canada in 2004, she understands some of the tribulations newcomers go through.
“Especially being a new immigrant myself, I know what emotions a person goes through when they come to Canada, and homeownership really is what solidifies a person to say, ‘Yes, this is my country,’” said the DLC Key Mortgage Partners broker. “That’s why that program is really special to me. I’ve gone through the process myself and I know how having a good broker—or not having a good broker—impacted things when I was looking for a home.”
Madan has also been nominated for the Alternative Broker Specialist of the Year (Business for Self) Award and can once again relate to the hoops self-employed house hunters have to jump through.
“I’m self-employed and I know what kind of challenges a self-employed person goes through when they’re looking for a house,” she said. “Getting nominated in these two categories is really special.”
Equitable Bank is sponsoring the Alternative Broker Specialist of the Year Award at the April 20 gala at the Liberty Grand in Toronto, and according to Joe Flor, it’s important for the lender to support its broker partners.
“It’s about continually growing our brand and having that brand recognition,” said Equitable Bank’s director of national sales. “We’re growing in the channel year-over-year, in terms of market share and our presence, and to have the opportunity to be in front of our peers and broker partners to present an award that is suited around the alternative side definitely cements us as one of the big players in that space. For us, it’s an honour and a means to continue growing our brand.”
Flor says the CMAs are the single largest event in the Canadian mortgage industry, and sponsoring an award is an opportunity for Equitable Bank to present itself in front of the industry’s biggest players.
“You always have the main players at the CMAs. The superbroker heads are there, industry leaders are there, and so are industry leaders with respect to our competitors, so from that perspective it does help with brand recognition because you’re in front of the people that matter. You’re recognized a little bit more. But being in front of those higher-ups, you’re always top of mind with them.”
