As the CMA nomination process ramps up for another year, the 2013 recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award admits he was surprised by the distinction while the sponsor of the award itself shares its reasons for backing the honour.

“It meant a lot, obviously, to win the award,” Doug Farmer of First National Financial told MortgageBrokerNews.ca “It was completely unexpected: I had heard a few people nominated me but with the amount of support needed to get that award is huge. When they called me, I thought someone was playing a trick on me.”

When he heard the news, it took some time to sink in.

The annual Canadian Mortgage Awards, hosted by CMP Magazine, celebrates excellence within the mortgage brokerage industry and each year recognizes the merits of one industry player by awarding the Lifetime Achievement Award. The award is sponsored by National Bank, which remains committed to honouring the 2014 recipient of the honour.

“We see this award as an opportunity for the brokerage community to nominate a peer who has had an impact on this industry,” Sebastian Kuperhause, National Sales Manager, Mortgage Broker Services at National Bank told MortgageBrokerNews.ca. “It is also someone who has made the brokerage industry their life passion (and) over the years we have seen recipient from virtually every aspect of our amazing industry, from industry founders and lenders to brokers.

“This is what makes this award so great to sponsor – it’s a celebration of everything that makes our industry great.”

And in a way, the award allows for the industry to give back to those who have dedicated their lives to it.

“It helped me realize what I have done in the industry has helped a lot of people,” Farmer said. “Just to win that award proves that what I’ve done means something to people.”
