Canada's best mortgage professionals honoured

Westerners challenged Ontario dominance at the 2012 Canadian Mortgage Awards Friday, the industry celebrating that excellence in Roarin’ 20s style at Toronto’s historic Carlu.

Winners at the 2012 Canadian Mortgage Awards cut a wide swath across the industry, with B.C., Alberta and Saskatchewan mortgage professionals claiming the lion’s share of the 21 awards at the gala event sponsored by Home Trust.

While the night of awards focused on acknowledging excellence, it also served to provide a pat on the back to the industry as a whole,” said KMI Publishing and Events president Tim Duce. “This is our sixth annual event, and it continues to attract the brokers, the lenders and the insurers that are driving this industry and setting the course for its growth.”

Ron Swift, CEO of Pacific Mortgage Group, accepted the Lifetime Achievement award Friday, pointing to the growth of the industry yet to come.

“I got this award, but I’m hoping this doesn’t mean it’s over,” he said. “I’m as excited about the industry as I’ve ever been. I think that there are going to be lots of changes coming our way.”

The celebration comes as the industry waits on a host of mortgage lending guidelines expected to hit the Canadian market later this month. Those more stringent underwrting standards come courtesy of the Office of the Superintendent of Financial Institutions.

Still, mortgage brokers are well positioned to weather those changes, with the awards a testament to their professionalism, said Duce.

Increasingly, property investors are themselves taking note of the Canadian Mortgage Awards, using it as an opportunity to familiarize themselves with the industry’s leaders and the expertise more and more investors are relying on.

Hosted by Canadian comedian Jessica Holmes, the themed evening featured Charleston-dancing flappers, live music and sponsorship from both Radius Financial and Merix Financial, other key mortgage lenders.
