Calgary home starts for 2010: CMHC

Calgary construction starts for 2010 are forecasted to total 9,100 by the end of December, according to the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation.
 
CMHC predicts the total numbers will be 5,900 detached single-family home starts and 3,200 multi-family housing starts.
 
The federal agency expects 2011 total starts to decline by 200 compared to this year.
 
Across Alberta, all housing starts in the seven largest cities declined 17 per cent last month to 1,801.

    These numbers are inline with expectation. Number of projects which were on hold in 2008 and 2009, are active from Q3 2010. Considering normal industry cycle, these projects will generate adequate inventory in 2011 and consequently new starts will decline marginally. Couple of big projects and investment in energy sector in 2011 may change above projection.
