Broker video pokes fun at banks

by |
One broker is giving bank mortgages a good ribbing with a video that’s gone viral and stirred some leads.

“I found that advertising with education with humour is a key combination for building business and trust with my customers,” Mike Hattim of Dominion Lending Centres Forest City Funding Inc. told MortgageBrokerNews.ca. “Many news/comedy shows use this technique, which ends up having their bits shared all over social media … because even if the information is not of interest, they at least enjoy the humour in it.”

The phenomenon was enough to inspire Hattim to create his own video, stamping it with the slapstick title “My idiot neighbour got his mortgage from the bank.” He has a smattering of subtitles running throughout the video, which borrows a European clip of two men speaking Spanish and sharing a chuckle. Hattim’s subtitles suggest the men are laughing at a neighbour done wrong by a mortgage deal with a bank.

“One night I saw this video and found it to be priceless and watched it over and over again laughing harder each time with no idea what the gentlemen in the video were saying because it isn’t in English,” Hattim said. “Then I thought what if he was having a conversation about someone he knew buying a house, getting a mortgage, and made the mistake of going to the bank.  So I made a short script and added subtitles to the video.”

    Brilliant.

  • Ron Butler on 2015-03-25 11:08:29 AM

Actually I find this more or less racist, demeaning and inappropriate. I am sure that some people find it insulting to their culture. Not sure why anyone would think this is positive for our business.

  • James Shinners on 2015-03-25 11:17:36 AM

This is not racist. I don't believe anything negative was said about a particular race. I laughed so hard I cried.

  • Tracy Luciani Price on 2015-03-25 11:22:03 AM

The video was hilarious and I loved it. Good for Mike Hattim for coming up with such a creative idea for getting our message out to the public. There was nothing racist at all in the video and some people need to get a sense of humour. hahahha

  • Frank on 2015-03-25 11:27:03 AM

It was all in fun but still making a valid point. Good job.

  • Rick on 2015-03-25 11:29:51 AM

I think the intent of the video was to be funny not racist. But the title is super misleading. Video goes viral? 125 views on youtube is hardly viral. A few thousand would be impressive.

  • Cat on 2015-03-25 11:36:51 AM

Loved it and shared! This fellows laughter is contagious. We need that these days.

  • E.F on 2015-03-25 11:37:35 AM

Rick.. It has almost 4000 views on vimeo. I thought it was hilarious lol.

  • Matthew Hines on 2015-03-25 11:39:12 AM

You can't help but laugh. Still trying to figure out how this could be considered racist or inappropriate. Did I miss something.

  • banker on 2015-03-25 11:40:51 AM

interesting, broker channel banks, scotia, TD, b2b, national, equitable, cff soon to be a bank Street, etc etc are always sponsoring every broker event that comes along, and they respond with this? pretty offensive

  • Grant on 2015-03-25 11:43:26 AM

The irony of Ron Butler talking about racism. That is truly funny.

  • Ron Butler on 2015-03-25 11:49:34 AM

When you use fake English sub-titles on a foreign language video it's insulting to the culture no matter how you slice it. Secret Grant, come down to my office and we can have a wider discussion, love to meet you.

Hi Banker, I get your point but I am sure no harm was intended. The purpose of a broker is to represent both parties and be sure that each is clear of the others obligations and responsibilities. My biz mandate has always been to bring a good bank an equally good client. Brokers are to be impartial therefore it is about the clients best interest in getting the proper contract with the bank that most suits their needs.

  • Matthew Hines on 2015-03-25 12:20:15 PM

Hi Banker - I can see how it would seem to be slamming the banks. I am not sure if it was meant in that way or not. However, it seems every now and then someone at a bank does something to slam the broker industry and in this case maybe to brokers to slam the banks. For me, it only highlighted the fact that any lender is going to ultimately do what is right for them. It is up the us agents to ensure the client gets what is good for them and/or to explain clearly what they are getting into. Besides, sometimes we all just need a good laugh. Still trying to figure out why this would be considered racist. Can't anything just simply be funny anymore?

This isn't racist at all, its hilarious.

  • Anthony C. on 2015-03-25 12:44:13 PM

    @ Banker...

Its all in good fun...just like we regular people should smile and have a laugh (rather than a cry) when we read that the heads of Canada’s five largest banks were among the top paid 30 CEOs in Canada, led by Royal Bank of Canada chief Gordon M. Nixon at $13.73 million, in comparison to the average Canadian earning $46,634 last year, even though the banks reported less than expected earnings revenues.

Have a laugh or not, we are all in this mess together and a video poking fun (not at Spaniards, as some of our thin-skinned and politically correct, boring, dull commentators may indicate otherwise) but at the bank's practice of not always offering the best rate...

    Salude...

  • Jesse on 2015-03-25 12:52:33 PM

Ron, Can you put the bottle of Vodka down for a minute so we can have a sensible conversation...

    Russell Peters drives a Bentley...

  • JohnD on 2015-03-25 12:55:57 PM

Banker...you make a SMALL point. One thing you forget to mention is that the 'banks' such as TD, BNS, CIBC, BMO& RBC all slam brokers ever chance they get. Even the guys running the broker channels for TD and BNS speak ill of brokers. I have had clients come to me telling me the wildest stories their 'banker' told them about brokers. Maybe its about time someone does it back. At least Mike did not insult the banks as they do to us.

  • Dave on 2015-03-25 1:59:15 PM

JohnD just nailed it... bankers at branches and their mobile reps slam brokers with all kinds of outright lies and nonsense ........Ive heard all kinds of stories from my clients who went to their branch and mentioned they were working with a broker already....

Congrats to Mike Hattim , the video was hilarious and wasn't racist at all....don't know where Ron Butler is going with that comment.

  • darlene on 2015-03-25 2:03:17 PM

That was hilarious. . . and it had a lot of truth to it. If someone takes the first rate a bank offers them, 99% of the time, it's not a god deal. Let's be honest. . .

  • Gary Mauris on 2015-03-25 2:26:00 PM

Michael, we are proud of your creativity at DLC. Love the light hearted use of humour to get people talking about working with a mortgage professional. You have had a huge impact on DLC, you are one of the finest brokers in the Industry, and you run away from status quo. If you want to be different, you have to be different and you exemplify this. Well done bud!!!

  • Chase Cooper on 2015-03-25 3:16:41 PM

I am glad most people view this as what it is, something comical to make us smile while mentioning some truths for a consumer. To call it racist or anything but what it was intended is just an opinion but maybe one that should be kept to themselves until you can actually meet said person who made this video. I have met Mike and I can tell you he would be the last person I would ever call racist or have intention of being so. Lets just take off our "we are super serious industry members" hats and appreciate a good laugh when it comes along.

    Thanks for the laugh Mike!

  • John B on 2015-03-25 3:57:24 PM

Before I say anything, I must say this is as far from racism as most of the Big 5 are from fairness and equity to their customers. I use a really good young lawyer, a lot, whose spouse works for a big bank with 4 initials. Because of the spouses insistence, the lawyer now refers to any mono-line as a B lender.
Only yesterday I reviewed a renewal letter, with a client, from 1 of the bigs. This is a client with everything going for them including 5 years of excellent repayment history. Can you believe they were offered 4.54% for a 5 year fixed. What the bank does not realise is out of anger the couple are moving all their other products as well.

I may have gone further, had I done the video!

  • broker on 2015-03-25 4:06:52 PM

How is this original???? This exact video was used poking fun at the Leafs at the trade deadline. Further, this is the farthest you can get from professionalism.

  • Werner on 2015-03-26 8:50:21 AM

Very 'hilarious' slapstick title 'My idiot neighbour...'
What about a video made by the banks with slapstick title "My idiot broker wasn't able to find me the best rate..." very flattering isn't it? And lot of fun too...

  • Jesse on 2015-03-26 9:47:40 AM

Werner...at no time did the video call bankers idiots. They called a phantom neighbour an idiot. However, you just called brokers idiots. This coming from what is clearly a banker or an idiot broker/agent himself. Maybe 'banker' should learn something about mortgages before commenting or slamming brokers who specialize in it.

  • Cat on 2015-03-26 9:58:35 AM

Good point Jesse! Thank you for stating this. Turns out a comedic, otherwise harmless, video has become polarizing.

  • Dave on 2015-03-26 11:30:27 AM

I like this video alot better than the banks and their over the top , super politically correct, happy happy unicorns and rainbows everywhere commercials .... take a mortgage from us and we'll make you rich BS they try to sell to virgin homebuyers with downpayments from their parents....what a joke

  • Shaun Serafini (@mortgagepro10) on 2015-03-26 12:09:13 PM

The nice thing about a person's opinion is that we can choose to ignore it.

The video was hilarious and did what I'm sure Mike's goal was - got people talking. It's about as offensive as the old Mac vs PC ads, which is not at all.

  • Chris Richards on 2015-03-26 12:52:59 PM

Video was way more funny when I saw it first poking fun at my Oilers (sounds like one is out there about Maple Laughs, too;). Lots of people have made parodies with this video. Guy is actually talking in Spanish about getting dressed in sandals, bathing suit, and food/cooking, hardly offensive. Hard to understand him!
